Observation Practice 1: Observation of Strangers
For this activity, I choose to observe shoppers at the Oakridge Mall. Below is some preliminary information noted for this observation:
Date: Thursday, February 1st
Time: 10:45-11:00 am
Location: Oakridge Mall
Observed group: people shopping at the mall
As an observer, I sat at a bench located near at the mall entrance. Although it was raining that morning and it was actually a weekday, the mall seemed to be much busier than I initially anticipated. It was quite warm in the mall and pop music was playing as the background music. There was a coffee shop at the left side of the entrance door and a restaurant at the right side.
Two men came through the door. They dressed very professionally and looked sharp. It seemed that they were both in the middle of their 20s. They are about 5 feet 8 or 5 feet 10. Both of them seem to be Asians but I cannot be sure. As it was raining outside, they folded their umbrellas first as they walked through the door. Then, one of them took off his long coat. He was wearing a black suit. Maybe he felt a little bit warmer being inside the mall. They were chatting along and both of them were laughing during their conversation. I could not hear their conversation but they were chatting in English. Maybe they were colleagues and this could be their coffee breaks. They walked quite fast and quickly, they disappeared from my sights. Suddenly, I was distracted by the sound of baby crying and I turned around. There was a woman standing in front of the entrance trying to take off the rain cover from the stroller. She seemed to be around 30s and is about 5 feet 6. Her stroller has one infant car seat on it. So, the baby should be quite young age-for sure under 1 year old. She may be a Japanese as I heard her speaking Japanese with her baby. She did not have an umbrella with her and her jacket was wet. After taking off the rain cover, she quickly took off her wet jacket and put it in the bucket underneath the stroller. The baby was crying and sounded unhappy. She was trying to reach something from her diaper bag and meanwhile, she was talking to the baby and pushed the stroller back and forth. It seemed to me that she was trying to calm her baby down. She took out something from her bag and gave it to her baby. Unfortunately, I could not see exactly what she gave to her baby from my angle. I was also curious to see how the baby looked like but again,I could not see from where I was sitting. While her baby seemed to be calming down, she pushed away the stroller quickly and got into a store far away at the end. Then, she lost in my sight and I could not see which store she went in.
